Student Handbook

Iron Mountain Public Schools Student Handbook 2026-27

Hello Mountaineer families,

Please take the time to go over our 2026-27 Student Handbook. There are some points we would like to highlight now:

(These are important details to callout - full policies are in the Handbook)

Attendance is Priority!

  • Regular school attendance is key to academic success. Students are expected to arrive on time before the first class and stay until the end of the school day. If a student is unable to attend school, the student or parent must report that absence to the Main Office at 906-779-2610.
  • If a student arrives late, the student must sign in at the office. A student may only leave school early if the student’s parent notifies the office or the student is an emancipated minor or 18 years old.
  • If a student cannot come to school, a parent or guardian must call the Main Office within 24 hours to explain the reason for the absence.

Tardies (Late Arrival and Missed Instructional Time

Being in class on time shows respect for your teacher and classmates. A student is considered on time when they are in their assigned seat and ready to learn when the bell rings.

  • Tardy (1 to 5 Minutes Late): This is marked as “Tardy.”
  • Absent (10+ Minutes of Instruction Missed): Arriving 10 or more minutes late OR missing more than 10 minutes of instruction. This will be marked as “Absent.”

Consequences for Repeated TardinessRepeated tardies will result in the following consequences:

  • 4 Tardies per class per semester = 1 Hour of Saturday School

Final Exams (HS)

  • Grade Weighting: The weight of the final exam for each course earning high school credit will be described in the class course syllabus, with the remaining percentage coming from daily marking period work.
  • Attendance Requirements: All students are expected to take their final exams during the scheduled exam days. Missing a final exam without a pre-approved medical or legal excuse will result in a zero for the assessment.

Cafeteria Rules

Students are expected to follow the standard School Code of Conduct at all times. In addition, the following specific rules apply to the cafeteria to ensure a safe, clean, and orderly environment:

  • Proper Furniture Use: Use all tables and seating appropriately. Climbing, stepping on, or crawling under furniture is strictly prohibited.
  • Inside Voices: Maintain a classroom-level volume. Yelling, screaming, and excessive noise are not permitted.
  • Cleanliness: Students are responsible for cleaning their table and floor area before leaving.
  • ID Policy: Students must use only their own student ID at checkout. Using another student's ID is prohibited.
  • Traffic Flow: Follow all designated directional signs and staff instructions for line queues and traffic flow.

Food Safety & Etiquette:

  • No throwing food or objects.
  • No taking food from others.
  • No food or drink may be taken out of the cafeteria.

Thank you in advance for your time in reading the handbook. Please direct any questions to your student’s school office.
