Happy Retirement, Mrs. Rhonda Carey!
After an extraordinary 30-year career, Mrs. Rhonda Carey is retiring from Iron Mountain Public Schools, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, service, and unwavering commitment to students, staff, and the broader community.
For three decades, Mrs. Carey has been a cornerstone of the Iron Mountain High School faculty. From the classroom to the courts, the track, and beyond, her contributions have shaped countless lives and enriched the culture of the school. Her passion for education extended far past academics—she was a tireless leader and mentor in a wide range of extracurriculars. Mrs. Carey coached both girls and boys tennis and led the girls track team, inspiring student-athletes with her dedication and sportsmanship.
Mrs. Carey’s impact didn’t stop with athletics. As advisor of Tri-Hi-Y and the Environmental Club, she guided students in building not just knowledge, but character. Under her direction, these clubs undertook countless service projects over the years. From annual blood drives to invasive species eradication efforts, students had the opportunity to give back to their school and community in meaningful, lasting ways. Mrs. Carey’s hope—that they carry forward a deep appreciation for community involvement—has surely been realized in the many young lives she’s influenced.
While Mrs. Carey says there are too many memories to choose just one, her legacy is marked by the quiet consistency of someone who always showed up, gave her best, and expected the same from those around her. Looking ahead, Mrs. Carey plans to continue embracing the outdoors and the active lifestyle she loves—traveling, camping, biking, running, and spending quality time with her family and friends.
As she embarks on this new chapter, Mrs. Carey leaves with deep gratitude for the opportunities she’s had and the people she’s worked alongside. “I am grateful for the privilege to work alongside dedicated colleagues and for the professional and personal growth I have experienced over my thirty years at Iron Mountain High School,” she shares. “Once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer.”

After three decades of dedicated service, Mr. Dale Powell is retiring from Iron Mountain Schools, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students, athletes, and colleagues alike.
Over the past 30 years, Mr. Powell has worn many hats—educator, coach, mentor, colleague, and friend. That journey continued in the elementary grades, with 8 years in the 4th grade classroom and 2 years as an Elementary PE Teacher. Most recently, his last 6 years were spent back in 4th grade, where he continued to shape the hearts and minds of the next generation.

Looking ahead, Mr. Powell plans to hit the golf course often, take long walks, and possibly invest in a pair of electric bikes with his wife, Amy. Family time and travel are also high on the list—well-deserved after 30 years of giving so much to others.
“I will always remember my time at Iron Mountain Schools,” Mr. Powell shares. “I have met so many special people and will leave with many special memories.”

Butterfly Release and Sign Dedication at North Elementary
Today, Rebecca Krans from Michigan State University Extension returned to North Elementary to install signage in the butterfly garden alongside Ms. Spencer’s third grade class. The students were thrilled to take part in this hands-on experience, learning directly from an expert about the importance of pollinators and how the garden will serve as a vital habitat.
As part of this special day, the class also had the exciting opportunity to release butterflies they had carefully observed through each stage of metamorphosis in their classroom. Watching the butterflies take their first flight into the very garden created to support them was a powerful and memorable moment—bringing their science curriculum to life in a truly meaningful way.
In the fall, Rebecca planted a butterfly garden at North Elementary School for students to enjoy and learn from. This special garden was registered as a Monarch Waystation, providing nectar and shelter for Monarch butterflies and other important pollinators.
A variety of native plants were included to support pollination and offer habitat: showy goldenrod, New England aster, pale leaf woodland sunflower, grey-headed coneflower, Joe Pye weed, early goldenrod, foxglove bearded tongue, bergamot, calico aster, pale purple coneflower, wild strawberry, butterfly weed, and marsh blazing star. While it may take a few years to fully flourish, this garden is sure to become a treasured space at North Elementary.
