Student Handbook

Iron Mountain Public Schools Student Handbook 2026-27

Hello Mountaineer families,

Please take the time to go over our 2026-27 Student Handbook. There are some points we would like to highlight now:

(These are important details to callout - full policies are in the Handbook)

Attendance is Priority!

  • Regular school attendance is key to academic success. Students are expected to arrive on time before the first class and stay until the end of the school day. If a student is unable to attend school, the student or parent must report that absence to the Main Office at 906-779-2610.
  • If a student arrives late, the student must sign in at the office. A student may only leave school early if the student’s parent notifies the office or the student is an emancipated minor or 18 years old.
  • If a student cannot come to school, a parent or guardian must call the Main Office within 24 hours to explain the reason for the absence.

Tardies (Late Arrival and Missed Instructional Time

Being in class on time shows respect for your teacher and classmates. A student is considered on time when they are in their assigned seat and ready to learn when the bell rings.

  • Tardy (1 to 5 Minutes Late): This is marked as “Tardy.”
  • Absent (10+ Minutes of Instruction Missed): Arriving 10 or more minutes late OR missing more than 10 minutes of instruction. This will be marked as “Absent.”

4 Tardies per class per semester = 1 Hour of Saturday School

Absences

Excused: Absences for approved reasons, outlined in the Student Handbook, and/or confirmed by parent/guardian calling in. Unexcused: Missing school without a valid parent note or skipping class.

  • 3 Unexcused Absences/Semester: Early intervention letter sent home.
  • 5 Unexcused Absences/Semester (Truant): Parent meeting requested.
  • 8 Absences/Semester: Placed on Credit Review Status; must make up time in Saturday School and submit an Attendance Appeal if passing.
  • 8+ truant days/Semester (Habitual Truancy): Can lead to alternative placement, court hearing, or referral to legal authorities.

Final Exams (HS)

Mandatory Attendance:

  • Students must take exams on scheduled testing days. Pre-arranged administrative exceptions are required for makeup exam rescheduling.
  • Seniors who meet the following criteria may be exempt from second semester exams:
    • Maintain at least a 77% (C+) average in the course for the second semester.
    • Have no more than eight (8) total absences in the course for the semester.
