"Postcard Man" sends gift to IMPS

IMPS Superintendent of Schools, Jerry Sardina, received a letter that would transport him and the entire community back in time – all thanks to a 96-year-old Californian known as the "Postcard Man.

Mr. Lowell Joerg, also known as the “Postcard Man,” resides in California, spending his golden years in an extraordinary pursuit: finding and returning vintage postcards. A self-proclaimed enthusiast of the "redistribution of happiness," Lowell takes it upon himself to reconnect these timeless messages with their intended recipients. And this time, the lucky recipient was none other than IMPS

The story began when Lowell Joerg stumbled upon a charming relic of the past at an antique store in California. It was a postcard featuring a picturesque image of the Iron Mountain High School, dating back to the early 1900s. A remarkable piece of history, the postcard showcases the school's elegant architectural design and brought forth memories of a bygone era.

With the excitement of a treasure hunter unearthing a long-lost gem, Lowell decided that the postcard deserved to find its way back home, across the miles to Iron Mountain, Michigan. His letter to Superintendent Sardina carried not only the precious postcard but also a heartwarming message of community and the joy of rediscovering a piece of the past

Lowell expressed his genuine delight in reuniting the postcard with its rightful home.

Upon receiving Lowell's letter and the vintage postcard, Superintendent Sardina was both surprised and touched. "It's not every day that you receive a piece of history in the mail, especially one that is so deeply connected to our community. We are incredibly grateful to Mr. Joerg for his dedication to spreading joy and connecting people through these beautiful postcards."

As for Mr. Lowell Joerg, he continues his mission of spreading happiness, one vintage postcard at a time. His story serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can have a profound impact, transcending generations and creating lasting connections.

We are a MI HEARTSafe school district!

Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young (SCDY) occurs when a young, apparently healthy person dies suddenly from a cardiac arrest or an unknown cause. SCDY claims the lives of more than 300 Michigan children and young adults (under 40) annually. Of those 300, approximately 34 of them are under 18.

A HEARTSafe designation recognizes a school’s efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death by preparing for a cardiac emergency. Members of Iron Mountain Schools know how to recognize the signs of a sudden cardiac arrest and respond quickly by calling 9-1-1 and using CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) until EMS arrives.

Our Heartsafe renewal will last for another 3 years and after that time we will apply for another renewal.. During the next 3 years we will continue to certify staff members and students in CPR and the use of AED. We have 5 AEDs and hope to add another one this year. Each building has an emergency response team and we will be running 2 drills per year in every building to keep skills current and sharp. It is our hope that we never have to use these skills but as a Heartsafe school, we are ready to recognize and respond quickly to a cardiac emergency anywhere in our school district.
